Frequently asked questions

Are results known as soon as polls close?

No. The first calls can come soon after polls close, but close races take hours, and states with long counts take days. We show each call with the time AP or DDHQ announced it.

Why do some states close at two different times?

Some states span two time zones, so polls close in most of the state first and in the rest an hour later. The table lists each state at its main closing time.

What’s in the calendar file?

Reminders for election night (6 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET on Nov. 3) and the key closing times. The file opens on your device; we don’t store anything.
